چکیده

Computational techniques adapted from classical mechanics and used in image analysis run the gamut from Lagrangian action principles to HamiltonJacobi field equations: witness the popularity of the fast marching and fast sweeping methods which are essentially fast Hamilton-Jacobi solvers. In sharp contrast, there are very few applications of quantum mechanics inspired computational methods. Given the fact that most of classical mechanics can be obtained as a limiting case of quantum mechanics (as Planck’s constant h tends to zero), this paucity of quantum mechanics inspired methods in image analysis is surprising. In this work, we derive relationships between nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi and linear Schrödinger equations for the Euclidean distance function problem (in 1D, 2D and 3D). We then solve the Schrödinger wave equation instead of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We show that the Schrödinger equation has a closed form solution and that this solution can be efficiently computed in O(N logN), N being the number of grid points. The Euclidean distance can then be recovered from the wave function. Since the wave function is computed for a small but non-zero h, the obtained Euclidean distance function is an approximation. We derive analytic bounds for the error of the approximation and experimentally compare the results of our approach with the exact Euclidean distance function on real and synthetic data.

A Schrödinger Wave Equation Approach to the Eikonal Equation: Application to Image Analysis

As Planck’s constant ~ (treated as a free parameter) tends to zero, the solution to the eikonal equation |∇S(X)| = f(X) can be increasingly closely approximated by the solution to the corresponding Schrödinger equation. When the forcing function f(X) is set to one, we get the Euclidean distance function problem. We show that the corresponding Schrödinger equation has a closed form solution whic...

A fast eikonal equation solver using the Schrödinger wave equation

Abstract. We use a Schrödinger wave equation formalism to solve the eikonal equation. We show that a solution to the eikonal equation is obtained in the limit as ~ → 0 of the solution to the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation. The Schrödinger equation corresponding to the eikonal turns out to be a generalized, screened Poisson equation. Despite being linear, it does not have a closed-for...

Fast convolution-based methods for computing the signed distance function and its derivatives

We present a fast convolution-based technique for computing an approximate, signed Euclidean distance function on a set of 2D and 3D grid locations. Instead of solving the non-linear, static Hamilton-Jacobi equation (‖∇S‖ = 1), our solution stems from first solving for a scalar field φ in a linear differential equation and then deriving the solution for S by taking the negative logarithm. In ot...

A new variational principle for the Euclidean distance function: Linear approach to the non-linear eikonal problem

equation corresponding to the extremum of a variational problem, we obtain the Euclidean distance function S = −τ log(φ) in the limit as τ → 0. This is in sharp contrast to solvers such as the fast marching and fast sweeping methods which directly solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation by the Godunov upwind discretization scheme. Our linear formulation provides us with a closed-form solution to the...
